Wilderness Safaris is a conservation company who won the Travel & Leisure “World’s Best” Award in 2022.

“Explore Africa” with Wilderness Safaris which spreads across seven countries and offers 40 luxury camps, situated in certain of the continent’s most isolated, pristine and game-rich areas. Wilderness Safaris are memorable, high-end adventures that aid to preserve biodiversity, conserve wildlife, and improve conditions for local communities.

Wilderness Safaris was founded in Botswana in 1983 and they have a custodial sense of protection as well as a sense of urgency to protect these fragile ecosystems and the lives depending on them.

Our travellers will benefit from private access to two and a half million hectares in some of Africa’s most pristine wilderness areas.

In August 2012, I organised a trip with Russel Friedman to see if he could participate and help friends of mine to build an eco-lodge in Brazil bordering the Xingu Reserve. We spent two weeks exploring the Amazon with park guides and listened to the vast knowledge behind Russel’s advice.

Russel was an integral part of the Wilderness Safaris family and business. He founded and was chair of the Wilderness Trust and later, Children in the Wilderness as well.

The company’s conscience in the areas of community, ethics and conservation was deeply influenced by this legend and Wilderness champion. It was an amazing, awe-inspiring experience to spend two weeks in the Amazon by the side of Russel Friedman, accompanied by Bonnie, his wife. Russel was also the driver of the Tour de Wilderness mountain bike events, raising funds for Children in the Wilderness and the Trust.

In 2018, Russel Friedman, one of the three original Wilderness Safaris stalwarts who had a tremendous love of life, passion for conservation as well as huge integrity, passed away. This formidable personality was active until 2018 in playing a central role in the company’s growth and development and one of the original co-founders of the Africa Safari operator in 1984.

My work with Wilderness Safaris goes back many years and I would like to share their vision and work ethics with travellers.
